Our History
Step back in time and embark with us on a journey through the fascinating history of DiMillo’s on The Water, a renowned Portland waterfront restaurant that has been serving the freshest seafood for decades.
It all started back in 1954 when Tony DiMillo, a passionate restaurateur, opened his first eatery, “Anthony’s,” on Fore Street in Portland, Maine. Tony’s creativity and love for fresh seafood led him to coin the catchy slogan, “The clams you eat here today slept last night in Casco Bay.” With this commitment to quality and freshness, Anthony’s quickly gained popularity among locals and visitors alike.
As the 1960s brought significant development to Fore Street, Tony made the decision to relocate Anthony’s to Center Street. This move ensured that the restaurant could continue to thrive and provide its patrons with the same exceptional dining experience they had come to expect.

Five years later, Tony took another entrepreneurial leap and opened “DiMillo’s on the Waterfront,” just across the street from his current location. This new venture quickly captivated the hearts and taste buds of people from all over the country who flocked to Portland year-round to savor DiMillo’s famous lobster dinners. DiMillo’s on the Waterfront became a beloved institution, cementing its reputation as one of Portland’s most popular restaurants along the docks in Old Port.
Tony’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence knew no bounds. In 1978, he purchased the rundown Long Wharf and transformed it into “DiMillo’s Marina,” which rapidly filled all 120 slips. This expansion not only allowed more boats to dock but also provided a charming atmosphere for diners to enjoy picturesque Maine waterfront views.
The pinnacle of DiMillo’s journey came in December 1982 when “DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant” opened its doors, becoming the only floating restaurant on the Upper East Coast. This unique dining experience captivated guests with its charming maritime setting and satisfying seafood specialties. The floating restaurant, at an impressive 206 feet in length, 65 feet in width, and a weight of 701 tons, can still today, accommodate over 600 guests across its First Deck Dining Room, Port Side Lounge, Second Deck Dining Rooms, and three Outside Decks.
